Cloudflare Registrar
Cloudflare Registrar domain expired: auto-renew
Cloudflare Registrar auto-renews by default, first attempt 30 days out. The documented failure causes, the notices, and the grace period.
Cloudflare Registrar renews domains automatically, but a failed payment, registry problem, or disabled auto-renew can still leave registration near expiry. Check "Manage domains" for the status and auto-renew setting, correct the payment method, renew manually under "Registration > Renew/Extend" when available, and restore the domain if it entered redemption.
Why Cloudflare Registrar does this
Cloudflare's docs: "Cloudflare Registrar enrolls your domain to auto-renew by default", and "The first auto-renew attempt will occur approximately 30 days prior to expiration". The failure is documented plainly: "There is no guarantee that the renewal will succeed. Renewals may fail for various reasons, including billing failures and registry downtime". And: "If the renewal fails, you will receive an email notification and Cloudflare will try to renew the domain three additional times. If these attempts fail, you must manually renew your domain". After expiry: "your domain will enter a Redemption Grace Period (RGP) for 30 days", restorable but "restoration may require an additional fee".
Check it right now
Before changing anything, confirm what a crawler actually sees. The check is free, takes one URL and needs no account.
How to fix it
- In the Cloudflare dashboard, go to the Manage domains page and check the domain's status.
- Confirm the Auto-renew toggle is enabled; the docs note you should disable it, if ever, at least 30 days before expiration.
- Check the payment method on the account, since billing failures are the documented renewal cause.
- If the domain expired, renew manually: select the domain, then Registration > Renew/Extend Domain.
- If it is in the Redemption Grace Period, restore it; the docs note an additional fee may apply.
- Re-check the domain expiry with the free SSL and domain checker below.
Why it happens again
Auto-renew is the default and quiet until the card expires, the account email goes stale, or someone disables renewal while cleaning up. Cloudflare's own docs recommend reviewing the account often because renewal can fail. The notices exist, monthly lists and weekly and daily expiry emails, but they land on the account holder, not on whoever maintains the website.
stillindexed re-checks the URLs you give it every 30 minutes on Starter and alerts when a directive changes, at most 30 minutes after it does. It is a monitor rather than a crawler: it watches a list you choose and tells you when one of seven things changes. Card first, no trial, and a 30 day refund.
Catching it next time
Fixing it once is the easy half. The setting that caused this can be changed again by anyone with access, and the page will keep returning 200 while it happens.
