Squarespace Domains
Squarespace domain expired: grace and reactivation
Squarespace domains auto-renew and expire on failed charges. The grace period is 30 days on Squarespace LLC registrars, 40 on Tucows.
Squarespace domains expire when an automatic renewal charge fails or auto-renew is disabled, leaving the site dependent on the registrar grace period. Sign in with the owner account, open Domains, use "Update payment information" on the yellow banner, retry renewal, then recheck the domain after the documented recovery delay.
Why Squarespace Domains does this
Squarespace's docs: "Squarespace domains renew automatically to keep your site running smoothly. If we're unable to charge your payment method for a renewal after multiple tries or if you've disabled auto-renew, your domain expires". And the cause: "Unless you intentionally chose to not renew, domains typically expire when there's an issue with your payment method". Grace periods depend on the registrar of record: "If Squarespace Domains LLC or Squarespace II Domains LLC is your domain registrar, the grace period is 30 days", while for Tucows "the grace period is 40 days". Fees: "During the grace period, you can reactivate your domain at the current domain price with no additional fees. If you reactivate your domain after the grace period, you may incur a redemption fee".
Check it right now
Before changing anything, confirm what a crawler actually sees. The check is free, takes one URL and needs no account.
How to fix it
- Log into the domain owner's account and open the domains dashboard.
- Click the expired domain, then click "Update payment information" in the yellow banner.
- Retry the payment with the same billing information or update it, then confirm.
- Their docs note renewal can take up to 48 hours to direct to the site again.
- Re-check the domain expiry with the free SSL and domain checker below.
Why it happens again
The domain renews annually against one card, and the failure email lands with the account owner rather than the site maintainer. Squarespace even warns that some expired domains display an expiration date a year in the future in registry records, which is one reason a manual check of the records can look fine while the domain is expired.
stillindexed re-checks the URLs you give it every 30 minutes on Starter and alerts when a directive changes, at most 30 minutes after it does. It is a monitor rather than a crawler: it watches a list you choose and tells you when one of seven things changes. Card first, no trial, and a 30 day refund.
Catching it next time
Fixing it once is the easy half. The setting that caused this can be changed again by anyone with access, and the page will keep returning 200 while it happens.
