Squarespace migration lost pages: fix mappings

Translate old page and collection paths into Squarespace URL mappings, including blog and store patterns that change every item URL.

Squarespace imports and collection changes can alter page, blog, and store URL shapes, and it does not create the migration map automatically. Add old-to-new rules under "Developer tools > URL mappings," use collection patterns where every item moved, save, then test each old address after disabling or deleting the old page.

Why Squarespace does this

Squarespace makes migrations a URL mapping problem. Imported blog posts can move from /post-title to /blog/post-title. Collection items include the collection page slug before the item slug, and version 7.1 store items include /p/. Changing a collection page slug therefore changes every item beneath it. Squarespace documents a manual 301 in "URL mappings" after a page slug change; it does not describe an automatic redirect for that edit.

Check it right now

Before changing anything, confirm what a crawler actually sees. The check is free, takes one URL and needs no account.

Run the check

How to fix it

  1. List the old and new URL for each missing page. Keep the capitalization exactly as served, because Squarespace says mappings are case-sensitive.
  2. Open the "Developer tools" panel and click "URL mappings".
  3. For one page, add a line in the form /old-url -> /new-url 301, then click "Save".
  4. For a changed blog or collection path, use the documented [name] variable. For example, /blog/[name] -> /posts/[name] 301 maps every item without one line per post.
  5. For a version 7.1 store collection move, include /p/ in both paths, such as /store/p/[name] -> /buy/p/[name] 301.
  6. Run the redirect checker on representative old URLs. The old page must be deleted, disabled, or renamed before its mapping can work.

Why it happens again

Squarespace activates mappings from top to bottom, so a broad [name] rule above a specific page rule can send that page to the wrong destination. Keep specific mappings above broader collection patterns and retest both after editing the table.

stillindexed re-checks the URLs you give it every 30 minutes on Starter and alerts when a directive changes, at most 30 minutes after it does. It is a monitor rather than a crawler: it watches a list you choose and tells you when one of seven things changes. Card first, no trial, and a 30 day refund.

Catching it next time

Fixing it once is the easy half. The setting that caused this can be changed again by anyone with access, and the page will keep returning 200 while it happens.
