Squarespace noindex: page settings and site crawlers

A site-wide crawlers switch and a per-page Hide page from search results toggle. The exact paths, the plan limits, and why it comes back.

Squarespace can hide a page through "Hide page from search results," hide the whole site through "Block Search engine crawlers," or inject noindex through header code. Turn off the relevant setting or remove the code, save the page, then rerun the indexability check on the live URL.

Why Squarespace does this

Squarespace documents a site switch and a page switch. Site-wide: "Open the Settings panel. Click Crawlers.", then "Check the box next to "Block Search engine crawlers."", which adds "Disallow: /" to the site's robots.txt. Per page: "Open the Pages panel", open the page's settings menu, "Click the SEO tab. Switch the Hide page from search results toggle on." Their docs note that "Homepages and individual collection items don't have a Hide page from search results toggle", which pushes people to the fallback: "<meta name="robots" content="noindex">" pasted into Page header code injection, which is not available in the Basic or Personal plans.

Check it right now

Before changing anything, confirm what a crawler actually sees. The check is free, takes one URL and needs no account.

Run the check

How to fix it

  1. Open the Pages panel.
  2. Hover over the affected page and open its settings menu.
  3. Click the SEO tab.
  4. Switch the "Hide page from search results" toggle off.
  5. If the whole site is affected, open the Settings panel, click Crawlers, and uncheck "Block Search engine crawlers".
  6. Check site-wide and homepage header code injection for a robots noindex tag left over from a past landing page, and delete it.
  7. Re-check the page with the free indexability tool below.

Why it happens again

Two recurring routes. The code injection fallback hides one landing page and quietly hides the wrong pages instead: Squarespace's own troubleshooting for sites missing from Google begins "Check noindex tags", with the instruction to "remove any noindex code from site-wide code injection, and from code injection for your homepage". The robots.txt switch has its own trap: Disallow keeps Google away but does not remove pages it already indexed, so a site blocked during a rebuild can stay partially visible after unblocking.

stillindexed re-checks the URLs you give it every 30 minutes on Starter and alerts when a directive changes, at most 30 minutes after it does. It is a monitor rather than a crawler: it watches a list you choose and tells you when one of seven things changes. Card first, no trial, and a 30 day refund.

Catching it next time

Fixing it once is the easy half. The setting that caused this can be changed again by anyone with access, and the page will keep returning 200 while it happens.
