Shopify noindex: theme.liquid and hidden pages
Shopify hides pages with Liquid conditions in theme.liquid and the seo.hidden metafield. The exact steps, and how to check a page right now.
Shopify pages can receive noindex from a condition in theme.liquid, an "seo.hidden" metafield set to 1, or storefront password protection. Inspect the affected page, remove the matching Liquid condition or clear the metafield, check password protection when the whole store is hidden, then run the indexability check again.
Why Shopify does this
Shopify's own guide, "Hiding a page from search engines", documents two mechanisms. The first is Liquid in the theme.liquid layout file: "You can hide pages that aren't included in your robots.txt.liquid file by customizing the <head> section of your store's theme.liquid layout file", with their example pasting a condition on the page handle followed by "<meta name="robots" content="noindex">" inside it. The second is the seo.hidden system metafield: "set the metafield value to 1 to hide the page, blog post, or product from sitemaps, search engines, and your online store search". A third route hides everything at once: the password page, where "all of your online store's pages are hidden from visitors and search engines".
Check it right now
Before changing anything, confirm what a crawler actually sees. The check is free, takes one URL and needs no account.
How to fix it
- From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
- Find the theme, click the actions button, and click "Edit code".
- In the layout folder, open theme.liquid and search the <head> section for a robots noindex condition; their published example is an if-statement on the page handle wrapping <meta name="robots" content="noindex">.
- Delete the condition (or remove the specific handle it names) and click Save.
- If the page uses the seo.hidden metafield instead, open the page in admin, set the SEO Hidden metafield value back to blank, and save. Shopify's docs: "To make the page, blog post, or product visible to search engines again, delete the SEO Hidden metafield value, leaving it blank, and then save your changes."
- If the whole store is affected, check whether the online store is still password-protected after launch.
Why it happens again
Both mechanisms are set by hand and removed by hand. The Liquid condition lives in one layout file, so a theme update or redesign silently drops it or copies it forward, and a condition added to hide a test page often outlives the test. Private mode is meant to end at launch and regularly does not.
stillindexed re-checks the URLs you give it every 30 minutes on Starter and alerts when a directive changes, at most 30 minutes after it does. It is a monitor rather than a crawler: it watches a list you choose and tells you when one of seven things changes. Card first, no trial, and a 30 day refund.
Catching it next time
Fixing it once is the easy half. The setting that caused this can be changed again by anyone with access, and the page will keep returning 200 while it happens.
Other ways Shopify loses pages
- my Shopify robots.txt is blocking pages that should be crawled
- A store page in Google shows the wrong URL as its preferred version, and the canonical tag in the page source points somewhere unexpected.
- my Shopify migration lost pages from search
- A Shopify store reaches its final URL after two hops: one domain redirect from the platform and a second from a manual URL redirect.
- A Shopify storefront shows a connection warning because the automatic TLS certificate is stuck pending or failed.
