Wix wrong canonical: the Advanced SEO tab
Wix creates a default canonical for every page, and the Advanced SEO tab can override it. Where the override lives, and how to check a page.
Wix creates a canonical automatically, but a value saved under "Advanced SEO > Additional Tags" can override it with the wrong URL. Open the affected page through "Pages & Menu > More Actions > SEO basics," edit the canonical tag value, apply and publish the change, then recheck the live page.
Why Wix does this
Wix "automatically creates a default canonical URL for all of your pages", so the platform's default is right and the usual cause is a hand-edited override. Their docs document exactly where: "You can change the canonical tag for a page in the Advanced SEO tab if you have multiple URLs that go to that page", reached in the editor via "Click the Advanced SEO tab. Click Additional Tags. Click the Show more icon on canonical. Click Edit. Edit your tag under Tag Value." Their warning: "Changing your canonical tags can have an effect on how your site appears in search results." The documented reason the override exists is parameters: "you may have duplicate versions of a page if you apply tracking parameters to the end of a URL." Product, category and blog pages have their own copies of the same setting under Advanced, then Additional tags.
Check it right now
Before changing anything, confirm what a crawler actually sees. The check is free, takes one URL and needs no account.
How to fix it
- Go to your editor.
- Click Pages & Menu on the left side of the editor.
- Click the More Actions icon next to the affected page.
- Click SEO basics, then the Advanced SEO tab.
- Click Additional Tags, then the Show more icon on canonical.
- Click Edit and correct the URL under Tag Value.
- Click Apply, publish, then re-check the page with the free canonical checker below.
Why it happens again
The override sits behind an Advanced SEO tab that any editor can reach, per page, with no site-wide view of which pages have one. Their docs name the trigger, tracking parameters, so every new campaign becomes a reason someone pastes a canonical and nobody revisits it.
stillindexed re-checks the URLs you give it every 30 minutes on Starter and alerts when a directive changes, at most 30 minutes after it does. It is a monitor rather than a crawler: it watches a list you choose and tells you when one of seven things changes. Card first, no trial, and a 30 day refund.
Catching it next time
Fixing it once is the easy half. The setting that caused this can be changed again by anyone with access, and the page will keep returning 200 while it happens.
